Anecdote1776On 9 Apr 1833, Judith Pariott of Orange County, Virginia stated that she was present when Thomas Coppedge marched as an enlisted soldier in the spring of 1776 in Captain Gaskins company in Northumberland County. She remembers a verse sung by Coppedge when given orders to march:

"Awake, rouse your courage, Americans brave
For freedom to fight, and we will never be slaves,
Though Great Britain's subjects we are willing to be,
Yet Britons must know we love to be free."8

He initially enlisted in Northumberland County, Virginia, as a minute man in a Company commanded by Captain Thomas Gaskins, then accepted a commission for two years under Captain Gaskins. His company was part of the 5th Regiment of the Virginia line commanded by Colonel Crawford. He was stationed in Williamsburg and Norfolk for the duration of his two year enlistment and did not take part in any military engagements.9
Event-Misc27 Mar 1783He recorded a deed freeing his slaves on 27 Mar 1783 in Orange County, Virginia. His reason was religious as indicated by the language in the deed that stated "I Thomas Coppedge of Orange County from a deliberate consideration and conviction of my own mind am willing to fulfil that injunction of our Lord do unto all men as I would they should do unto me and having under my care one negro woman named Presiler twenty four years old and one ditto named Sarah twenty two years old, I do now for myself and my heirs release and discharge from being my property hereafter forever the above named negroes."11

Event-Misccirca 1808He was apparently in financial difficulties circa 1808 He owed debts to a store in Abremarle County and to another individual, and had his personal property sold at auction by the sherriff to settle a judgement against him.13,14,15
Court Chancery27 Jan 1808He was an orator in a Chancery Court case on 27 Jan 1808 in Augusta County, Virginia. Coppedge closed an account at Branham's store in Albemarle County in Dec 1801, owing a debt of 29 pounds for which he executed a bind payable to the Branhams. He paid all but 2 pounds 10 shillings, but the Branhams did not credit him for all payments and added additional interest. They sued Coppedge in Albemarle County and won because Coppedge did not respond to the suit. Coppage filed suit in Agusta County and was awarded an injunction for all but the 2 pounds 10 shillings.13
