CommentThe following is from a family history sent by Mary Virginia Dishman Baldwin to Samuel Roland Dishman in about 1935.

"James Edward Dishman, my great-grandfather, had two sons - Churchill or John Churchill and my grandfather, James Edward. We are told their parents died when these boys were very young. One a new born baby, and they were raised by people named Curtis or Curry. We aren't sure of their mother's name and think it may have been confused with the people who brought up the children. The father choked to death on a fish bone and the mother died from the shock of his death, being still in bed from her confinement. The boys were left some property and this man Curtis or Curry made poor investments and lost it, but felt he should do what was right as far as possible and offered them an education. The older one wasn't inclined that way but my grandfather was and we were told graduated from some college in Virginia. He was very well educated for the time and became a teacher, was proficient in Latin, also the regular branches. It is said he and his brother started west together with a group of people, among others were some named Bolling and Balthine. They separated some place in Kentucky, part of them going to Southern Indiana - my grandfather among this group."4,7

Brooke, deceased sheriff of Stafford County. Garnett and Brooke are referred to as committee admon. of _____ Dishman, deceased. The case was dismissed in June of 1825, no reason is given. Other than the summons there are no other documents in the court file.7
